This week's news:
AVALON BEACHFILL: Avalon's Borough Council appropriated $2.4 million for an emergency north-end beach fill last week. Sand began flowing onto the beach this past Tuesday, and was being pumped into place by a dredge stationed in nearby Townsend's Inlet. The NJ Department of Environmental Protection will reimburse the borough $1.8 million for the work. Avalon took advantage of a recently concluded beach replenishment project in Ocean City, which saved dredge mobilization costs of as much as $2 million.
CBS 3 TV in Philadelphia will be doing live weather forecasts from
Avalon during their afternoon news broadcasts from 4pm to 6:30pm
today. Weather forecaster Doug Kammerer will deliver live forecasts
from the Windrift. Also, look for an interview with Avalon Mayor
Marty Pagliughi on the subject of Avalon's current beachfill
project.
ONLY IN NEW JERSEY:
a state funded tourism impact study reported a
$36 return for every dollar invested in tourism promotion, yet the
state has cut tourism funding to $9 million in its 2008 budget from
$12.76 million in 2003. New Jersey has been criticized for
neglecting tourism promotion, despite the $38 billion in receipts
generated by tourism in 2007.
THE CAPE MAY-LEWES FERRY
has reduced the number of daily departures
offered due to low demand and rising fuel costs. As many as three
trips per day will be removed from the schedule throughout the
remainder of the summer. If you've never taken the ferry, try it.
It's an enjoyable outing, whether you go by car, or as a foot
passenger. Outlet shopping, historic towns, and great dining await
you on the other side of the bay.
NEXT WEEK: details on July 4th celebrations in Avalon & Stone
Harbor.
