ADVENTURE TOWN: National Geographic has named Avalon one of its "50 next great adventure towns" based on outdoor activities, cultural activities, and open space. Avalon was the only town in New Jersey to be named to the list. State College, PA was the only Pennsylvania town to be selected. The magazine has cited the towns as " [not] just prime relocation spots right now, but smart choices for the future."

AVALON GAINED SUPPORT from the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders in its suit against the NJDEP. Avalon filed a suit opposing the DEP's state aid agreement, which requires all beach towns to provide 24 hour access to beaches, waterways, and marinas in order to receive state funding for beach replenishment. Avalon opposed the requirements, citing safety concerns and private property rights. The case is expected to be heard September 16.

AVERAGE "SOLD" PRICES in the local market climbed by 2.0% through July 31 of this year, versus the same period last year. The number of units sold through July 31 was 138, down from 159 last year. 59 additional properties are currently under contract, with settlement dates as far out as August 2009.

ALSO UP slightly were interest rates. Although they remain between 6.0% and 7.0% depending on the loan amount and type of mortgage, rates have drifted upward slightly.
