AIR SHOW: the sixth annual Atlantic City Air show, held earlier this week, drew an estimated 700,000 spectators, overwhelming Atlantic City beaches. The estimated crowd was some 200,000 larger than initially expected. Traffic entering Atlantic City was snarled for miles on the morning of the show.
RAIL SERVICE to Cape May City may return in 2009. Cape May Seashore Lines, which ran tourist service into Cape May as recently as two years ago, hopes to return trains to New Jersey's southernmost city after major track and bridge repairs are finished. CMSL has also run tourist service from Tuckahoe to Richland, NJ, though that service did not operate this summer. It is hoped those trains will be running on weekends this fall, leading up to the "Santa Express" holiday trains in December.
Railroads are largely responsible for the early development of South Jersey's barrier islands, having delivered passengers from Philadelphia and Camden to the Jersey Shore, including Avalon and Stone Harbor, beginning in the late 1800s.
